s t a t s ; name: Aerith Gainsborough age: 22 eyes: Green hair: Brown occupation: Castle Gardener allegiance: The Church
h i s t o r y ; The identity of Aerith’s biological mother is unknown. As a newborn, she was abandoned on the doorstep of Elmyra Gainsborough in Narborough with nothing but a piece of parchment with her name scribbled on it. Elmyra, a widow, took the baby in and raised her as her own. Believing the child a blessing, Elmyra kept her name as Aerith and offered her what she could.
The house Aerith had ended up at was small and on the poorer side of town. Regardless, Aerith grew up happily. Elmyra often took her to the church for lessons whenever time allowed. The girl was a quick learner and remembered things well, but her interpretations of some of the texts studied raised eyebrows. Her beliefs in things, such as the afterlife, differed from those in the church. She never tried to change their views. Everyone was entitled to his or her own opinion, after all, and Aerith knew life was too short to argue over such things. They would find out the truth, sooner or later.
Aerith helped Elmyra work in the castle gardens, tending to them daily, though the walk from town to castle seemed to tired her mother a little more each day. Working in the castle introduced her to new acquaintances, and many were impressed by Aerith’s charming and bright personality. Gardening was a poor-paying job, but it gave Aerith insight into the life little girls always hoped to attain. She seemed to have a green thumb when it came to plants. It was not uncommon to see the girl up to her elbows in mud, talking to a blooming flower. They always seemed to grow a little faster when Aerith took care of them.
When she was sixteen, she met a boy named Zack. She found him amusing and quite different from all of the other soldiers she had met. Before she knew it, the two were courting each other. Yet just as quickly he appeared in Aerith’s life, he was gone, called away. Aerith never saw him again. Many thought he had died, but Aerith wouldn’t believe it until she saw a body. Yet there was little time for her dwell over her loss—Elmyra’s age was catching up to her, and Aerith was relied on more and more to tend to the castle gardens. Eventually, Elmyra could do little but tend the little garden they had at home. Aerith began going to the castle by herself and selling flowers when she could. If not working, she was often at the church, praying for her mother’s strength and for Zack’s safe return, even if her gut told her that both may be impossible.
Many thought that she was more than a little odd. She was in her twenties, unmarried, and did little more but hold on to old ghosts and speak to flowers. Nevertheless, Aerith continued to keep a smile on her face as she worked around the castle.
p e r s o n a l i t y ; Aerith comes off as a good-natured girl. She’s sweet, cheerful, optimistic, and dislikes seeing anyone sad or upset. Some may see her as naive and weak, but she’s a very understanding and humble woman who isn't afraid of speaking her mind. She has a unique skill with plants and is very good at reading people's emotions, wanted or not.
Aerith can be stubborn at times, and might lack a little tact when she says what she’s thinking, but she never means any harm. If she does wrong, she’ll do all she can to fix it. Once Aerith sets her mind on something, she’ll stick with it until the end.
